In an era where workplace safety and inclusivity are paramount, the Government of India has taken a commendable step forward with the SHe-Box (Sexual Harassment electronic Box) initiative—a centralized digital platform developed by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD). This innovative mechanism is aimed at reinforcing compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (“POSH Act”) across public and private sectors.

What is SHe-Box?

Launched officially via a Press Release dated 29th November 2024, the SHe-Box portal has emerged as a transformative tool designed to:

  • Enable women employees to file and monitor complaints of sexual harassment at the workplace.
  • Serve as a centralized repository of Internal Committees (ICs), Local Committees (LCs), and establishment-wise data.
  • Facilitate registration of ICs by organizations to ensure visibility, accountability, and monitoring at a national level .

SHe-Box goes beyond complaint redressal—it also acts as an educational and awareness hub, providing access to:

  • Training modules and sensitization materials
  • Advisory documents and handbooks
  • Awareness videos and FAQs for complainants and nodal officers

The Role of the Nodal Officer

To streamline and supervise the SHe-Box registration process, every organization is required to appoint a Nodal Officer. This individual:

  • Must be a permanent employee with sound knowledge of POSH laws, but not a member of the Internal Committee
  • Should be authorized through a Board Resolution or Authorization Letter
  • Will be responsible for: Registering the IC and updating its details on the portal Submitting Annual Reports online Coordinating complaints through the platform Organizing awareness and training programs Acting as the primary liaison with the MWCD and concerned District Authorities

Post-appointment, the Nodal Officer’s details must be shared with the District Nodal Officer (DNO), who verifies the appointment and activates the officer’s access credentials for SHe-Box.

Mandatory Registration in Delhi and Mumbai

Following directions from the Women Empowerment Cell of the Government of NCT of Delhi and the District Women and Child Development Officer, Mumbai City, all establishments within these jurisdictions have been mandated to:

  • Designate a Nodal Officer
  • Register their Internal Committee on SHe-Box

Failure to comply could result in regulatory scrutiny and adverse legal consequences under the POSH framework.

Proactive Compliance in Other States

While several states may not have formally mandated registration, organizations across India are strongly encouraged to proactively register on SHe-Box and maintain robust POSH compliance mechanisms. This includes:

  • Voluntary appointment of a Nodal Officer
  • Timely update of IC constitution
  • Regular awareness and sensitization initiatives
  • Filing of POSH Annual Reports online

Given the centralized nature of SHe-Box and its recognition by the Union Government, compliance is no longer a best practice—it is a national expectation.

For legal and HR professionals, corporate leaders, and compliance officers, embracing SHe-Box is a critical step in aligning with national mandates and fostering a culture of respect, safety, and zero tolerance towards workplace harassment.
